The Merchant’s Daughter by Melanie Dickerson
Beauty and the Beast retelling! I have had this book on my TBR for about 2 years now, so I decided it was time to read it. Annabel used to be a daughter of a wealthy merchant but after sickness took the life of her father, her family was penniless. They have to work the land just like everyone else, except her mother and brothers figure they are too good to do work so they all don’t for 3 years. (A little bit of Cinderella story there) A new Lord, Lord Ranulf, puts the family on trial for not doing their share. They are found guilty and must pay the price. They don’t have the funds so one member of the family must be an indentured servant for Lord Ranulf for 3 years. Annabel volunteers to go because her family wants her to marry a Bailiff who is a horrible creep. She figures being Lord Ranulf’s servant is a better choice even though he seems Beastly. Of course he is not like everyone thinks and he tries to keep her safe from the Bailiff who is still after her even though she refused him.
I LOVE this Beauty and the Beast retelling. I loved the characters both Annabel and Lord Ranulf were wonderful. I loved how much Annabel wanted to be able to read the Bible and how Lord Ranulf allowed her to read his. A great reminder of how blessed most of us are to have access to a Bible. Loved how the author incorporated a lot of scripture reading and discussion about it between the main characters. Very Clean! Definitely recommend!
