In His EBook Review

In His Eyes by Stephenia McGee

Set in 1865, Ella finds herself being the only one willing to help a Lady of the Evening, Cynthia, give birth to her baby. When complications arise, Ella promises Cynthia that she will make sure the baby is taken care of. Cynthia tells her where there is a wet nurse and they helped her sister, The Remington Place. Cynthia passes away and Ella take the baby to the Remington Place before she gets to the door she sees Yankee soldiers at the door. She hides behind a bush and observes. A Black woman, named Sibby, opens the door. The soldiers are there to make sure the landowners don’t have any slaves, since the Civil War is over and they were set free. Sibby informs them they are all free. The soldiers ask to speak to the owner. She informs them they are dead and that their son is gone in the military but should return. Ella decides to act like she is this son’s wife and the baby is his son. She approaches and tells the soldiers this and Sibby goes along with it realizing the woman and baby need help. The soldiers believe her and go on their way. Sibby is a wet nurse so she feeds the baby. Ella asks to stay there and work to provide a roof over her and the baby’s head and so that the baby can be fed. Sibby asks her to continue to pretend to be Mr Remington’s wife so when the soldiers come back they won’t question anything and it would protect them. Sibby shows her a letter that says Mr Remington might have died too. Ella agrees to the ruse.

Major Westley is not dead only injured and once he is healed enough to go home he does. There he finds a wife he didn’t marry and a baby that is not his.

This is one book where I read the description and had to read the book! Absolutely loved this book! Great story! My first read by Stephenia McGee. I really liked her writing style. Very easy to read. Ella was a great character. She is very caring, takes the baby as her own, she has a fiery side to her when she gets mad. Westley is also a great character, he is very caring too, also like his sarcasm. Side characters were great too. I liked Sibby’s character. There are a lot of different dramatic elements to this book that keep you interested in seeing what happens next. Clean Read. Definitely recommend!

Bedroom kissing scene was a tiny bit too detailed.

The dream scenes were creative, and If you are a Christian already work well.

The romantic relationship was slightly too physical attraction only.

“A man should not see a woman with whom he is not intimately familiar with her hair around her shoulders. It’s not proper.”

His brows lifted, and mischief danced in his dark pupils. “Oh, but don’t you remember? You are my wife.”
